This paper attempts to outline five periods in the development of the Bulgarian language situation, the initial stage taken to be the third fourth of the 18th cent. and continuing into the foreseeable future through the next decades of the 21st cent. The focus is on tracing the mezolects as a type of interlanguage characteristic of those dialect speakers who are forced by the social reality to acquire the Bulgarian language standard. A prognostic idea is suggested. In the future dialectless situation the mezolects will, due to their very nature, become a kind of substandard which in the course of decades will merge into the low style of our language standard. The object of this study is Petko Todorov\u2019s short story of \u201cTsar Simeon\u201d. The article examines the short story in view of the Bulgarian historiographic ideas for the historical personality of Tsar Simeon. Petko Todorov\u2019s differentiation between the values of the cultural policy of the great ruler on the one hand and his military policy on the other could be associated with the modern aesthetics of the Bulgarian literary circle \u201cThought\u201d and its affinity to the ahistorical concept of eternity.
